Safely Storing Your Bicycle

Keeping your bike out of the elements is a great way to ensure that it will be in good working order when you take it out next. Storing your bike indoors, like in a garage, is often the best place to keep it. Here are a few helpful tips for safely storing your bicycle.

Saving Space
It's an easy trap to fall into. Putting everything in your garage and packing it so full that you can't even park your car in there. Buying a bike rack or a lift is a great way to store your bicycle indoors without having to take up much space. One of the most popular ways to save space is to install a ceiling bike lift. By screwing the supports into the ceiling and then attaching the bike to the hanging suspenders, you can keep the bike off the ground, away from rodents, and out of your way.

Maintaining Your Bicycle
Keep the Bike Clean- Spending 10-15 minutes after a hard ride, or once a week to keep your bike clean will most definitely pay off in the long run. By using simple dishwashing liquid, warm water, and some degreaser you will keep you bike nice and shiny, as well as in great working condition. Washing a bike is very similar to washing a car. When you are though washing be sure to lube up the bike chain because it can lose some moisture in the cleaning. Also, never use a pressure washer when washing your bike, and if you are using a hose, keep the pressure low.
Maintain the Chain- The chain of your bike is most definitely one of the most important parts of the bike. Without a working chain you aren't going anywhere. Some simple maintenance will help keep you chain going for a long, long time. It is recommended that you clean and lubricate your chain at least once a month, or more if it is wet outside. Over time, your chain will stretch out and become slack. Keep an eye out for this because if it is caught early it will save you some hassle in the end.
Listen to your Tires- If you begin to hear squeaking, scratching, or anything from your tires, then it is probably time to regrease them. This will keep them in proper working order. If you tires become rusty you will be pedaling much harder than necessary, and possibly breaking other parts of your bicycle.
